This makes me want to laugh out loud. A resounding YES. We have phrases that rhyme that are flung against the “darkest in the family”, sometimes by the child’s own mother. Like Kaali Kaluti Baingan Looti (translates loosely into Black blackie stole eggplants/brinjals)

Darker kids, especially girls, are told not to have tea or coffee because it will make them darker. Not to go in the sun because …it will make them darker. Dark girls are told to study harder because “Who will marry you and support you?” It is bad enough being a woman in a society like India, being dark is an unbearable curse.

Jamshedpur, India. Dentist, mom of 2 girls, lives in a joint family, in love with the written word.
