Whole grains, prayer, and siblings on the harvest festival of 14 January

A celebration spread: sugarcane, sweet and salty rice-and-lentil dishes, and a savory doughnut-shaped lentil cake called Vada. Photo provided by the author.

I’m not religious, and I’m not asking anyone else to be. I believe in rites and rituals because if we can get up in the morning and do squats, lunges and tricep dips then we can jolly well perform a few rituals which aren’t as pleasant as we’d like. …

Here’s a story that we all ought to read before the January fitness motivation wears off

Let’s prove to Dr. Burg that his health story is as popular as his humor and satire!

I always hoodwink myself into believing that I’m doing everything right, fitness related, and then I step on the scale.

The problem is, aging.

Aging makes it feel as if I’m working harder…

Hair, sibling rivalry, parenting, economics, and nutrition. It’s just hair. Or is it?

Photo by the author of my daughter’s hair before and after the hair smoothing procedure.

Last month, I took my thirteen-year-old daughter Sivakami for a hair smoothening procedure that I had myself had a few months earlier. My hair which was prone to hair fall had become silky and manageable over the three-hour procedure. I wanted Sivakami to experience the same “I love my hair!”…

I had a new experience with the father of an adult male patient, who insisted that his thirty-year old son who took an appointment for a full scaling ($15.48 in Indian rupees) have only the two dirtiest teeth be cleaned for a lower fee ($4.71)

I did as the dad…

The day my husband said: “Don’t say “eff” within earshot of our daughter, she’s only eighteen!” — and the aftermath

My husband and I. Our eighteen-year-old daughter took this photo.

The eff controversy erupts.

A few days ago, my daughter, eighteen, said “What the f” in front of my husband. She didn’t complete the last word, but her “what the f” was enough for my husband to chastise me for my usage of foul language, which is foul enough to make a sailor blush…

So what would it say about you?

You could call it a banana tiffin box, or a banana case. It prevents the banana being squished in your bag when you carry one to office or school, because of course, one should eat a banana at lunch time. …
